How to Use Our Google Drive

So what do you do after you can log in? Our scriptwriters wanted to tackle this issue next. For someone arriving in a Manaiakalani classroom after being given their log in, where to next? What is a google doc? What is a google drive? Where can I find my work after finishing it? This was our next focus, and here is our movie! It was the first time we tried screen castify - what do you think?

CyberSmart and 6 year Olds?

This week I had the pleasure of challenging myself to adapting our CyberSmart Curriculum from teaching concepts to Years 4+ to teaching the concepts to Year 2s!

So! How to teach the concept of a digital footprint to children who have only just learned to log on to an iPad? I decided to start with breaking down the concept of a digital footprint, and then take my cues from how quickly the class moved on. I also remember from teaching juniors how many different ways we need to teach the same concept in order to reach all children.

Getting Our Netbooks Ready

Here was our first attempt at creating a movie tutorial for children who are new to Manaiakalani. Our scriptwriters thought we should start with the basics - what a child needs to know when walking into  a Manaiakalani classroom for the first time.

We thought about the common questions we hear from new students to our school:

  1. How do I turn my netbook on? 
  2. How do I log on?
  3. How can I get on my emails?
  4. What equipment does it come with?
  5. What do I do with the equipment while I am at school?

Thinking of these questions, we came up with a script that answered them.  Here is our result of this script - let us know what you think!!

PB4L - What Describes a Tamaki Learner?

Today I was lucky to work with the wonderful Room 8 at Tamaki Primary. We were given the challenge of describing a Tamaki Learner. Well, the words we found - amazing! The best part for me was hearing the discussions around the tables as children debated which words were appropriate.

  • Cultural Responsiveness - how we implement as teachers.
  • Critical Literacy - being reflective in what we read and hear - inequality in power - dominant cultures - music, lyrics, radio... as well as books.
  • Recognise difference! Recognise human celebrations!
  • Giving children control over their learning - promote new hybridized cultural practices
  • How can we make our classroom practices 'multimodal'?
  • Critical Literacy - looking at things through other perspectives... Inquiry!
  • Critical Thinking - analysing and reconstructing our own thinking
Think of an iceberg - there are surface cultural features - food, flags, clothes, holidays, music, games, arts and culture...; and then there are deeper cultural features - conversations, rules of conduct, concept of cleanliness, tone of voice, concept of 'self'...
  • Responsiveness - how can we adapt what we are putting on our walls to show cultural responsiveness?

What parts of my classroom programme reflect my culture, and what parts that of my students?
  • I think that I enjoy order and this reflects in my classroom. I like having order on the walls, order in behaviour and order in tasks and planning. Because of this I can now see that this may clash with some of the way my students work, and to be culturally responsive, I need to respect that 'disorder' doesn't reflect disrespect. An interesting idea...

Being Back in a Classroom

Today I am back in the classroom. With the shortage of relievers I have been put into a year 5/6 class, that I also did the planning for this week. I cannot begin to express what a joy it is to be teaching again. I forgot how much I love the process of planning, teaching, creating, then celebrating the success with students!

We have started with a focus on Northwood by Brian Falkner. He is coming to visit our school next week, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to get stuck into his literature. When planning for reading for this week, I was aware of the variety of reading needs in this class. Because of this, instead of reading this book, we are listening to it on the radionz website. And what amazing learning is already coming from it - children who are reading at a 7 year level, being able to discuss their ideas with children who are reading at an 11 year old level. The rich discussions were a joy to be part of. Love it. To summarise our reading, we created group synopsis's of each chapter so far. Since then, we have moved onto writing, and yet I have caught three children still listening to the story - contagious reading! Children who are not so keen on reading, sneaking reading during other learning times...
